House of Griffin & of Limburg-Luxemburg: Elizabeth of Pomerania
Not much about Elizabeth’s life is known previous to her marriage. She was the oldest child of Duke Bogislaw V of Pomerania and his first wife Princess Elizabeth of Poland, also known as Elżbieta Kazimierzówna.
Elizabeth married Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, who was also King of Bohemia, on May 21st, 1363, when she was just sixteen and he already forty-seven. On June 18th the same year, she was crowned as Queen Consort of Bohemia and five years later, she was crowned as Holy Roman Empress Consort by the Pope in Rome.
Elisabeth is said to have been a very vigorous, self-confident and physically strong person. The relationship between Elisabeth and Charles is described to have been good and harmonious. During the serious illness of Charles in 1371, Elisabeth made a miniature pilgrimage by walking on foot to the cathedral and offering gifts in a prayer to his health.
The number of their children is disputed. While most historians give the number of six, Jiří Fidler claims there to be two more children, a Johann before The Duke of Görlitz and a Mary who supposedly lived between 1375 and July 24th, 1385. Personally, I doubt that as unlikely. The first Johann did not die young but is supposed to have lived from 1369-1385. At the same time, the second Johann was also alive. I doubt they named two of their children the same name and most records forgot about one. Similar things are valid for Mary who, according to Fidler, was about ten when she died and not an infant.
Elizabeth’s husband died in 1378 and retired from most of public life. She devoted herself to God and charity. In 1381, she was allowed to negotiate the marriage of her oldest daughter Anne of Bohemia to King Richard II of England.
Elizabeth died on February 14th, 1393. She is buried next to her husband at the St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague.
